The problem with free code is, it's free; although in a budget-conscious
university environment, it's easier to justify free, somewhat-supported
products, there's always a certain amount of hesitance on the part of
administrators to endorse 'free code', whether or not it's the 'Network
Standard' (whatever that is :-)
Crashing a server machine, or messing with one that has privileges, is
the kind of thing that scares the heck out of auditors, managers, and all
the nervous folks we (LISTSERV postmasters) have been trying to convince
of it's usefulness, dependability etc. And these are usually reasonable
folks; "take-it-or-leave-it, it's free, whaddya want" is acceptable, but
"well, it's prone to crash on five days notice when the author gets pissed"
is absolutely not.
Eric, you've been doing a terrific job; please don't blow the credibility
and respect that you've earned!
