Probably because you used the FILELIST command and did SAVE, or something
like  that.  FILELIST  happily  overwrote the  file  without  asking  for
confirmation or printing any warning message.  The best is to restore the
file from backup.

Use  a decent,  well-behaved interactive  directory display  program like
FLIST, or make your  own EXEC to always make a  copy of LISTSERV FILELIST
before you call FILELIST, in case you or one of its functions does a SAVE
by mistake.
