Well, you don't fully  realize what it means to have a  lot of small logs
until you offer to take a few lists from FINHUTC and fall within a hair's
breadth of  being sent three  thousand five hundred individual  files :-)
The database functions get impossibly slow if you have too many files. It
just takes time to open tons  of small files containing a couple messages
each when you  have to do a text  search. There is more data  to get from
the disk, and there is more  system overhead involved. That's why the old
LISTS database  could take a minute  on a 3090-class machine  for a "dumb
search" when  the new  one only takes  3-5 seconds. What  is so  bad with
weekly or monthly logs?
