Anthea, there ARE people who trash lists 'for fun', and certainly
are some organized groups who have done so to some newsgroups. Check
out rec.pets.cats if you need an example. I imagine it is a bunch of
immature hackers, and the goal is simply to see if it can be done. Or,
in some cases it may be a grudge of some sort, like the guy who shot
all the air force folks because he'd been kicked out of the service. Of
course he shot the shrink who kicked him out first.
The one thing that hasn't been mentioned so far, at least on list that
I've seen is to simply unsub the worst offenders. Simply tell the list that
offenses of type x will get one warning. Next offense, they are gone.

Like any threat, you have to be willing to carry it out. You could really
get tough and list the names of offeneders who are publicly warned. o-)
