You can certainly change * SUBSCRIPTION= OWNER, but what did
that REALLY accomplish unless you somehow validate the new
subscriber via a dialog e.g., fill out an application form?
 
You might want to re-think the kinds of conversations that
are occurring on/thru your list and the level of security/
trust that you have.
 
For starters:
 
* REVIEW= OWNER
* SUBSCRIPTION=OPEN,CONFIRM
* SEND= EDITOR
* EDITOR= your_userid@host,(listname)
 
This is part of the SPAM-avoidance techniques, but does nothing
little about privacy or trust.
