It would seem to me this would violate some pretty basic principles
of list operating. Someone who's subscribed against her will is in a
position where she'll be reminded, every time she deletes a message
unread, that she's getting them though she doesn't want them. If it
were me, I'd either put the list address in a bozo filter or return
every message I got.

Why would they not want to? It seems to me that's the question you
need to address.
