Another trick to check about a failing Internet site is to check for
higher-level machines. I issued a Unix/Ultrix "finger @cl.msu.edu"
command, and found a number of users logged on (BARTON COOPER OPER1 OPER2
PMHUNT RWWMAINT XAMAP and a series of numbered, clearly non-privileged user
ID's). The command "finger [log in to unmask]" provided 1 non-registered
match.
Furthermore, neighbouring machines can be identified with the seed search
option of the netfind utility at bruno.cs.colorado.edu (telnet, login netfind,
no pw), and with the standard Unix/Ultrix nslookup command. You may then
try to finger one of those machines.
