Since your IBM 3081 is directly-connected to the Internet, it's highly-likely
that your site installed software which allows you to exploit this connection.
One part of this software is the 'TELNET' program,
which allows you to connect to a port, e.g., 'port-25', on a remote node.
Note that 'port-25' is the port for exchanging E-mail.
The 'VRFY <userid>' command is part of this port-specific protocol.

No; on the other hand, the VRFY command usually produces the least-useful
information on CMS machines, and the most-useful information on UNIX machines.
On CMS systems, VRFY sometimes reports that all E-mail, including E-mail for
an invalid ID, will be forwarded to the local mailer!
