Shaw.ca folks now say:

"Well persistence does pay off.  Thank you for sending the bounces,
using the information we were able to replicate the problem on other
test accounts.  Turns out to be a caps issue but only if it was the
first occurrence after a database cleanup. Subsequent accesses would
work if a lowercase query was first sent.  We are making a change
shortly to clean up this kind of activity and fully expect to not see
anymore caps issues. Should you see bounces on Friday I need to be
informed ASAP.  Our tests indicate the fix is the solution to this
problem and will be implement this evening. Thank you for your time."

I figured this quote from shaw.ca would be of general interest.
