Customizing subscription confirmation message

Is it possible to customize the message that is sent to someone sending a
subscription request for a mailing list that is set to "* Subscription=
Open,Confirm"?

My excursions through the listowner's manual and DEFAULT.MAILTPL file
indicate the answer is no, but I thought that it was worth asking.
