In practice, as opposed to in theory, the LISTSERV Distribute
Algorithm and other mail delivery asychronicities frustrates
the orderly shutting down of the thread.  There is no one
correct solution; your mileage may vary; offer not good
east of the Mississippi; caveat emptor.
