My favorite point is the high-level view: "Listserv's" (in the trade mark
violating sense) are local software that do the list distribution stuff.
LSoft Listserv is part of a network (backbone plus) that does global
distribution through a global network, and does spam-detection and inter-
server blocking.  eg: some server in Europe can warn yours about a spam
attack and cause it to be blocked before it even starts in the US.  There
are plenty of other specific functions this global network provides, like
CataList, but I like to frame my defense as a LSoft _network_+_application
vs. eveybody elses application-only so someone with no knowlege of the
details understands it's an apples vs. oranges comparison and not really
meaningful.
