I've been a lurker on this list for a few months (except for one
message, to which I never received a response), and although I've learned
a lot from reading the daily digests, there are some points which I
simply can't understand.
For instance, yesterday, Douglas Winship <[log in to unmask]> commented in
response to a question about turning off "nomail":
> And if you have RENEW the resetting of everyone's sub every day will
> make hash of the renew process.
This is not the first time I've seen that thought expressed.
Maybe I'm using a different version (my list runs under 1.8b Windows NT),
or maybe there is some option which the list maintainer has set for my
list which changes the RENEW option, but mine simply doesn't work that
way.
If I, as list owner, reset a subscriber's option, the date used by the
RENEW setting is undisturbed. The only way a subscriber's date gets
changed is if he/she either posts a message to the list or changes their
own subscription option themselves.
Which, as far as I'm concerned, is how it should work. I hope that this
won't be changed in some future revision.
A second point which completely eludes me has to do with the auto-delete
option. The manual states:
>By default, lists running under LISTSERV 1.8b and higher generate a
>report which lets the list owner know what userids are causing problems,
>rather than deleting users at the first error LISTSERV understands. If
>the Delay() and Max() parameters are set to non-zero values for a list
>coded "Auto-Delete= Yes", LISTSERV will not take immediate action on mail
>delivery errors. You will receive an "auto-deletion monitoring report"
>daily to show you which subscribers are bouncing mail, what the error is,
>when it started, when the last error arrived, and how many errors have
>been received for the subscriber in total. By default, LISTSERV will wait
>4 days (or for a maximum of 100 error messages per individual user)
>before deleting a subscriber.
And various messages on this list refer to the "monitoring report". I've
tried to set up the auto-delete function for my list, but unless I set
Delay(0), no one ever gets deleted, nor do I ever receive a "monitoring
report". The only advantage which *I* can see to the function is that
I stop receiving all error-messages. Which is nice, but I *would* like
to know what's going on.
