Keeping Listserv on VM

OK.  I've been told we're going to continue running our listserve
software (version 1.8a, I believe) on VM.
 
What do we have to do to keep it running there?
 
I realize this is an incredibly general (and probably dumb) question.
We're presently discussing why (or why not) we should stay with
BITNET.  Do we need NJE, for instance.
 
I appreciate, in advance, your patience.
