Instead of doing the  delete old addr/add new addr why not

  SET listname NOMAIL FOR oldaddr
  ADD LISTNAME newaddr fname lname

Then in the fall, swap the mail/nomail settings for the 2 addresses.
Unless you have subscription=by_owner, the users can do this for
themselves without you having to do anything.

Better yet, encourage students to use a local ISP that allows them telnet
access (AOL does not, but Compuserve does), and they can telnet back to
their school account.  No address change needed.
