One possibility is that the person's host is really a cluster of machines.  For
example, one of my email addresses is [log in to unmask]
Actually, there is no machine that corresponds to this address - just a bunch
of DECs called beauty.magnus..., top.magnus....., bottom.magnus... etc.  When I
log in, I don't control which machine I am connected to and it doesn't make any
difference anyway as all machines share resources.
 
Theoretically, if you fingered magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu and got a 'never
logged in' message, it could be that I had never been connected to that
particular box.
 
There are other possibilities, however, like the system being taken down and
rebooted between the subscription request and your 'finger' command.
 
Then, of course, there are the metaphysical explanations....
