I think there are a number of best practices that both companies and subscribers can / should follow.

1) don't willy nilly click on a link in an email

2) check the headers of a billing email (compare to other legit email that you have previously received):

    does it transit hosts (RECEIVED headers) that it usually does

    does it address you as a BCC: or list of (multiple) recipients (which would almost always preclude
the use of a LISTSERV list, but if it was legit to use a list for the billing dept, maybe use SET
option IETFHDR)

    does it address you are at your subscribed address (I try to use "+" addresses but not all
providers support that)

3) does the sender normally use your account identifier (last 4 digits of your account) in the body of
text

4) was the email received on the normal billing date

5) use your browser's bookmarks to go to your account provider's online site
