Much as I love the service, and like others here have been using it
since the days when you had to be invited, Gmail is not impervious to
attack.

Two friends have had their Gmail accounts hacked recently, and spam sent
out as a result. Neither were using two-factor authentication. One of
the two, who is tech-savvy, could see that her account had been accessed
from another country, and has now turned two-factor on.

In my experience, Yahoo is far more likely to be hacked, especially the
xtra.co.nz accounts that work through it (Xtra is the online presence of
the largest telecommunications company in NZ, Telecom NZ Ltd), but
perhaps that impression is simply because that's the country I'm in, so
I see more emails from Kiwis than other nationalities - especially on
the mailing lists I subscribe to.

The simple fact is that no ISP is immune to hacking, though some are
better at it than others, and some provide better protection.

But you have to protect yourself, and getting that through to the
less-savvy users is hard. Acting in a safe manner (ie not clicking on
those dodgy links!) and using the tools available (such as two-factor)
even though they may not be all that convenient can be too much of a
hassle to many, and we all pay the price for it.

Getting off my soap-box now, I know I'm preaching to the converted. ;-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy
