I believe we are seeing a lot of different responses on inane threads
because each list has its own personality. Some lists have a much higher
tolerance for off-topic postings than others, and there can be many
reasons for toleration or not. Some lists also cope with off-topic
postings better than other; others tend to jump on the bandwagon and
create extended discussions around the unrelated posting. So, it depends
on the list and what you as listowner and (possibly) the majority of your
members want. And remember that what the majority will tolerate may drive
a minority that you value away from the list. It's all about choices.
Decide on a policy and procedure to implement it (and then do it).
