Dear Colleague List owners,

Ever since we moved to having the list moderated (Editor=) I've had problems
with the following class of error:

  Error-Text: 554 sendall: too many hops 18 (17 max):
  from <@uga.cc.uga.edu:[log in to unmask]>,
  to @uga.cc.uga.edu:[log in to unmask]

I understand that the number of "hops" is related to the number of
times the message was forwarded, and corresponds to the "Received:"
lines in the header. But I don't know what to do about it. The
problem happens to several of our subscribers (INCLUDING ME), and only
when I am the Editor, not when the other 3 listowners serve that role.

Is there a setting I can use with my mailer (Elm 2.4) to raise the
acceptable hop limit? Should I remove some of the "Received:" lines
before sending submissions to the list? Any other solutions?

More info as background:
I think I know what is contributing to the large number of forwards.
Our header includes:

      Send=         Editor
      Editor=       [log in to unmask],owners

This allows all of us to receive postings, which gives us flexibility
in handing off the Editor task. ("An emergency has come up and I
can't finish sending out the accumulated submissions. Check the log
to see what's been posted and carry on for me, please.") But it also
means that the message goes from whatever queue postings go to
initially, to the "-request" address, then to me as a non-Quiet owner,
then I bounce it back to the list when I approve it, whereupon
Listserv forwards it to each subscriber (and there may be a few more
hops in getting to any subscriber).

But given that this configuration is a desireable one for us, how can I
get around this hop error?

Thanks as always,
Steve
