Since I'd like to do the same, I send to the list: to be corrected
before trying to do anything that ListServ wouldn't accept.
 
Two possibilites:
 
1) To add a file "listname WELCOME": it will be sent automatically (as
another piece of mail) at subscription in  addition to the standard
message.
 
2) To GET a copy of DEFAULT MAILTPL (new name vers. 1.8a for old
MAILFORM), and PUT the modified sections of it as "listname MAILTPL".
What I don't know is whether the descriptor of such a file must be added
beforehand to "listname FILELIST" or not.
