One year on sabbatical, not long after Canada "went metric," I wrote an
as yet unpublished article introducing the docimal system, based on
twelve, showing how much better it would have been if humans had evolved
with six fingers. More than half serious. (Why else do we have special
terms for eleven and twelve, rather than saying one-teen, two-teen? Why
do we have dozens and grosses in spite of the decimal police?) Even
hexadecimal would be better than ten.

And don't get me started on human-scale measurements. Feet I can
imagine, but how about one two-millionth of the distance from the
equator to the pole for a basic measure?
