Yesterday I asked about receiving notification from a subscriber that  each
item had been opened.  After moving her to digest and asking her to fix it, I
received the following:

We are using WP Office SMTP Gateway. The setting is Outbound Status Level, found
under Gateway Information, Optional Settings.  It was set to OPEN, I changed it
to undeliverable.  The info is on pps. 19 & 20 of the WP Office SMTP Gateway 4.0
DOS Guide.

This apparently worked, since I'm no longer receiving these messages.
 
Thank you everyone for your advice.  This list is a great resource for those of
