I appear to be overlooking something somewhere, or something isn't
working at UBVM.
 
To have a generic ft I installed  TEST1 REPORT in the filelist.  It is
in the filelist, retrievable with a "get" command.

Then I tried the AFD command again, only to get

Files matching the pattern "* REPORT" from filelist AUTOCAT is unknown to
LISTSERV.

Is there something so obvious here that I keep overlooking it?
If so, what?  If not, what is the problem?
 
I have read all the documentation I can find (some going back to 1.5)
and have tried to follow Eric's advice, but I just can't get it to
work.
