The basic summary of what I found is this - Listserv has always added
the spaces, because the web archives use <pre> tags and the spaces
balance and line things up for beautification purposes. Most mail
clients themselves compact the string of spaces in the email to one space
for the same beautification purposes, but the MS line of Exchange, Outlook,
and Outlook Express do not, they show it as is with the listserv-added
spaces. You can explicitly set your header type and turn off listserv
adding the extra spaces with:

  SET listname IETFhdr

The consequence of that is your archives and possibly digests look just
as screwy as the email with extra spaces in the subject, so you just
have to prioritize which you want to look better.
