The SMTP listener accepts mail for LISTSERV-related addresses only.
You would communicate with it using normal SMTP transactions. The
SMTP listener itself is incapable of sending mail. (It communicates
with LISTSERV by creating .job files in LISTSERV's spool directory.)

LISTSERV communicates with its SMTP_FORWARD_n using SMTP. (If it's
sending mail merge data it will use some customized SMTP extensions
which are not part of standard SMTP but which are also understood by
LSMTP.)

Thanks,
