There are several options; if you are using a standard Unix (such as
SunOS or BSD) you can use a program such as Listprocessor or
Majordomo--they do essentially the same thing as Listserv does.
You will want the sysop to set it up, as sometimes configuring it wo work
properly with the mailing system can be tricky.
 
If you're lucky enough to be using a Data General system, DG/UX has
mailinglist support built in; one can add people manually by editing
/var/mail-list/(your list's name) or you can write a script to
automagically subscribe and unsubscribe people.  The sysop will ned to se
this up as well, but if you're lucky enough to be on a system using DG/UX
I would DEFINITELY go this route.
 
As for Vaxen, I have no idea.  I have HEARD there is a version of
Listprocessor available for Vaxen, but as I don't use Vaxen I really
could not tell you anything about setting up a system for lists on a Vax.

I recently did the same thing with my list on the British comic 2000AD;
it's a LOT easier to run, and having an adress for your mailinglist gets
you a LOT more respect :) (Three days after Thrillpower reopened, I was
asked to put an entry in the InterNIC gopher for the Internet Yellow
Pages...also they look at it more as a "real" list).
