There are three separate and distinct relationships which an
individual may have with a list: owner, editor, and subscriber.
She may have one, two, or all three relationships with the same
list simultaneously. By default, the primary owner of a moderated
list is also the editor, unless an editor is explicitly specified.
For the purpose of this discussion, assume that at least one owner
and at least one editor have been explicitly specified in the list
configuration.

A list owner is authorized to add and delete subscribers, change
subscribers' options, and change the list configuration. A list may
be configured to allow the owner to post, however, the owner is not
automatically authorized to post to the list, nor does she receive
list postings.

A list editor is authorized to post to the list, but does not receive
list postings.

A list subscriber is authorized to receive postings from the list,
view and search the list archives, if any, and change some of her own
subscription options, including those which affect message delivery
(MAIL/NOMAIL/DIGEST/INDEX). A list may be configured to allow
subscribers to post.

If you want to grant posting rights to an individual, but prevent
her from receiving list postings, make her an editor - nothing
more, nothing less. If you make her an owner, she can add herself
to the list as a subscriber. If you make her a subscriber and set
her subscription to NOMAIL, she can change her own subscription to
MAIL.

If you want to grant posting rights to several individuals, it may
be easier to create a seperate list, subscribe those individuals
to the new list, then grant posting rights on the first list to the
subscribers on the second list. One of our colleges has a number of
student lists and uses this technique to enable faculty members to
post to the student lists, without the need to add every faculty
member to every list as an editor.
