Well...  that doesn't quite capture the whole flavor of the problem.
 
It will accept lines of any length, and will then truncate the
adress+name portion of the subscribe command to 80 characters when
performing the subscribe operation.
 
Bottom line is that a subscriber's address can have up to 80
characters, but to get that address on a subscribe command you have to
have a MUA that can handle >80 characters per line; and the same with
all MTAs between LISTSERV and the sender of the command.  The
unfortunate part is that LISTSERV (at least 1.7f) truncates the
address to 80 when it adds it to the LIST file, and then sends the
"You have been added" message to the original address.  So you don't
realize that the address has been damaged until your list processes
the next post.
