I run a group of lists which have been prone to spams, and I have tried
out an alternative method of prevention using the topics facility.

If a set of topics are defined for a list, genuine subscribers can be
persuaded to use them when posting. The random spammer will not be aware
of the topics and his/her post will not have a correct subject line, and
so will be sent to the reserved topic "Other".

If there is some sort of moderator receiving mail addressed to topic
"Other", then legitimate posts will go through even if not properly
addressed, while almost all spams will be intercepted.
