I don't understand either: they are searchable already via both a web interface as well as email.

Archives are easily exportable by an authorized (or perhaps public) user doing a

GET listname LOGnnnn

These files may be large and not suitable for recipients email system.

Further, you should be sure that the files don't don't lose their authentication / auttorization / privacy options (aka AFC).  E.g., if they are PRIVATE, then only current subscribers should be allowed to search.
