How about a translation table on the VAX?  At SIVM, we've got the (IBM)
8x8 name/node restriction but VAX people on SIMSC have 12+ character userids.
In order for our routing tables to be able to work properly (from PROFS -
and don't say YUCK, Eric), the VAX folks had to translate the ids.  This
approach might work for your problem.  A VAX person you might contact is
David Bridge:   DAVID@SIMSC    and he can tell you exactly what he did.
