A recent subscription to SCIFRAUD@ALBNYVM1 resulted in the following
acknowledgement (quoted in part):
..............................................................................
Date: Wed, 6 Mar 91 15:04:31 EST
From: Revised List Processor (1.6e) <[log in to unmask]>
Subject: Your subscription to list SCIFRAUD
To: [log in to unmask]

Dear networker,
As of Wednesday, March the 6th of 1991, you have been added to the LISTSERV
distribution list SCIFRAUD (Discussion of Fraud in Science) by
"[log in to unmask] Vincent Cate" <ACH13@ALBNYVMS>.
You may leave the list at any time (etc. etc. etc.)
...............................................................................
($DEFAULT MAILFORM was used.) Now what is strange about this is that while
ACH13@ALBNYVMS is an owner of the list, "[log in to unmask] Vincent Cate" is
not the owner's name. Relevant parts of file SCIFRAUD LIST are:
...............................................................................
. . .
* OWNER= ACH13@ALBNYVMS (Al Higgins)
* Owner= grape@albnyvm1 (Bob Pfeiffer)
. . .
ACH13@ALBNY1VX AL HIGGINS
. . .
[log in to unmask] Vincent Cate
. . .
...............................................................................
The string "[log in to unmask]" appears nowhere in SCIFRAUD LIST. However, in
SIGNUP FILE, there is the entry
ACH13@ALBNYVMS [log in to unmask] Vincent Cate
so it must have been there that LISTSERV picked up the name.
1. How did it get there?
2. Why is LISTSERV taking the owner's name from there instead of the more
authoritative SCIFRAUD LIST?
