We have a recurring intermittant problem with mail from LISTSERVe to
users trying to subscribe to lists and particularly to owners of lists

There is a period inserted in the from address between the
OWNER-listname and the '@' sign, in the mail from, such as

   MAIL FROM:<[log in to unmask]>

The following is the complete text of a sample bounced mail.

This has occurred on a number of lists on a hit of miss basis. I can
find no common thread or any error.

We are running VM / ESA 1.2
                LISTSERV 1.8c
                LMAIL 1.2a
IBM's SMTP as the TCPIP/SMTP processor

Any ideas, hints or I told you so's will be accepted with as much
grace as I can muster.
