Umm.. Think for a moment.  Specifying by IP would have done NOTHING for you.

It would have just gone KABOINK! and bounced at the remote end because
the hostname you SENT to wouldn't have matched its name.  If you handed
mail to 10.0.4.5 because that USED to be the IP address of exchange.dom.com,
it would have barfed because its name was now new-exchange or soemthing and
refused the mail.

And specifying the IP address will screw you over the next time a name
is retained, but the IP address changes.

Moral: Never lie to the nameserver.
