You don't *have* to, you can use a continuation line:
 
// ADD SOMELIST Joe X.400 user </ADMD=dsfhjkdjfgklfdjhkdfhkjgdfhjkgdfhjk@x40,
//+ 0.xyz.com>
 
But  the question  was whether  LISTSERV  would do  it if  it received  a
one-line request longer than 80, and the answer is yes. Whether or not it
actually gets a  single long line if  the list owner types  a single long
line is indeed another can of worms.

1.8a tells you that your address is too long, and doesn't add the entry.
