I am not sure about SoftSwitch but having just been exposed to another
mail gateway product (MailHub from Control Data Systems) I think I know.
These products are gateways. As such, they try (or should try) to make
things look as normal as possible on each side of the gateway. So if
the user on the other side of SoftSwitch is using some micro mail product
(eg. CCMail - however that is typed) these gateways try to present outside
addresses just as they do any other address on the CCMAIL system. And while
we may be very comfortable with [log in to unmask] that looks really
strange to the user used to typing "bill" or "hilary" in the address. ;-)

Anyway, I can see why the technique might be used. I think the problem
here is that SoftSwitch (from what I have heard) is notoriously unresponsive
to user needs and problems. Are they still owned by IBM? (I think Lotus
bought SoftSwitch some time ago and now IBM bought Lotus so... ;-).
