Upgrade the operating system, then the applications. It's often a good
idea to have a 'crash-and-burn' system handy to test operating system
upgrades. Locally, for AIX I test stuff on my workstation (a 43P-140),
SGI stuff gets installed first on an Indigo2 we have handy, and we have
a small pool of assorted random boxes for testing in our machine room.
It isn't guaranteed (we got hosed during an AIX 4.3.0->4.3.2 upgrade
this weekend because of a problem when upgrading directly without putting
4.3.1 on, which didn't surface on my machine). But especially if getting
Y2K-ready involves a new release, installing on a throw-away system first
means you don't get to climb the learning curve while your production server
is down. *NOT* a good time to be figuring out what order the CD's have to
be installed. ;)
What Unixoid variant are you running? ('uname -a' will tell you).
