You may be interested in how I solved the problem for one of our sites with
non-technical subscribers.

The original solution directed the user to the default join/leave template.
This was found to have too many options so it was reduced to a minimum set.
The email instructions page http://youthlearn.org/join/digest.html explains
the LISTSERV email  interface and provides mailto links for the various
actions.

LISTSERV(R) *IS* your electronic secretary.  Let the *real* important
secretary do what she does best, and let LISTSERV do what it does best.

I'm hoping that most scientists (social, political, or "hard") can figure
out how to subscribe and unsubscribe e.g., to subscribe to listX, send an
"empty" mail msg to:
