I run mostly support lists, and they have to be accessible to people with
visual impairments. HTML can make is difficult for text readers to work.

Not everyone has unlimited high speed connect time with no fees over
their their monthly payment. HTML takes up a lot more space to say the
same thing as plain text, and takes longer to download. Perhaps that
isn't significant when only 1-2 messages a day are going out, but it adds
up as the messages do.

If you have archives HTML is going to fill them up much faster than plain
text will.
