That brings up a pet idea I've been thinking about:
Now that Eric has implemented a nice facility for global maintenance of
a database (the LISTS code), how about employing a similar idea to
create a network-wide yellow pages/name server? LISTSERV is efficient,
almost universally available and the database features that Eric already
has implemented are far superior to any of the name servers I've ever
seen.
Hub sites (perhaps the sites currently running NETSERV) AND THE NIC
could hold the database and LISTSERV already has some idea of how to
route requests to the most reasonable server. Perhaps we could do it by
regions and use the LSVDELT mechanism to keep eachh server informed
about who has what information. It's an interesting idea, that's for
sure.
