My timing was off.  I had e-mailed by list's system manager twice many days ago
with the same questions I had here, but didn't get a response from him.  I
assumed my mail was getting through to him for whatever reason and posted here.
Just after I did, I finally received email from him, as well as the mystery
listowner doc that isn't suppose to exist.  Anyway, he's taken care of all
my questions.  Guess I panicked.
