Actually,  the INDEX  option in  the unix  version works  like the  INDEX
option on  VM sites with  LMail. Since  you were using  XMAILER, LISTSERV
could not  use the  -search-request aliases  and the  postings had  to be
retrieved in  a different manner.  Obviously this alternate  method would
also work on a VM site with LMail, it just isn't the preferred one.
