This is a VERY sticky issue. I would suggest you contact the owners of
dog-rescue who went thru a hostile takeover attempt a few months ago.

A few things you can do off the top of my head in no particular order:
1) Choose your co-owners CAREFULLY. Don't give anyone owner authority
unless you trust them.
2) Establish a second account with a different userid on a different
node and make it a quiet owner.
3) Keep master copies of all files locally. i.e. header, mailtpl etc.
4) Do a GET listname (NOLOCK on a regular basis. Assuming you have
notify = owner(s), save the notifications of subscribe and unsubscribe
between GETs.
