I found that using asterisks later caused problems with my use of the
asterisk for a wild card (although I don't remember actually how).

First I switched to dots, but then those made it difficult for me to scan
for them, since addresses also contain dots.

So finally I started using the tilde (~), which is a relatively
unobtrusive character, and unlikely to show up anywhere else.
