You need lb64 only if:
1. You want to update internal files with records longer than 80 bytes.
For instance, the entire list (as opposed to the header), or a
FILELIST, or some file you are making available and that is designed
to be printed in landscape mode.
AND:
2. The mail path between your machine and LISTSERV's machine isn't able
to handle messages with lines longer than 80. This could be due to a
gateway in the middle, or to the fact that the LISTSERV host runs
XMAILER R2.08 or older, or that its mailer and/or SMTP are not
configured properly, or then it could be the BITEARN NODES
registration which is incorrect.
At any rate, I would say that nowadays most "active" LISTSERV sites can
receive "wide" mail from any system directly connected to the Internet.
If you're sending via a BBS or UUCP, that may be another matter depending
on where your gateway is. But, of course, in absolute numbers there are
still 57 servers that can't handle wide mail (only one of which is on the
backbone).
