Probably what happened is that when you added the TOPICS feature
to the existing list, the already-subscribed folks were implicitly
set to NONE, even though you had correctly defined a DEFAULT-TOPICS=
keyword.
 
At this point in time, you could take several approaches, probably
none of which will produce "no pain."  One approach is to:
 
As list-owner, issue the command --
 
QUIET SET UNINFSEC TOPICS: ALL FOR *@*
 
then e-mail subscribers suggesting that they reset topics: as
you had posted once before.
