This raises another point.  I had a question from a user about what characters
were valid in topic names.  From a hasty look at the code I decided that
everything except :,= and blank were valid.  I've verified experimentally
that an imbedded - is valid.  But I guess it must be the case that an
initial - would not be valid.  Could you please state the exact rules?
