There is a short cut, but if you have multiple list-owners,
you would need to coordinate your efforts.

The short-cut is:
 
GET listname (HEAD NOL
 
This does NOT in any way lock the list, nor does it get the
subscriber info (thus your list can accept listserv subscription
service commands).
 
Update your headers as per usual and PUT them back to the LISTSERV.
 
If you have need of additional updates AND if you are the ONLY one doing
this, you need not refetch by doing the above GET, just locally update
your copy of the headers and PUT back to LISTSERV.
