In a quick test of my Outlook 2000 client I found there was a hard limit of
255 characters that would fit in the field.  I sent it to three different
online accounts and all 255 characters appeared as it was sent.

Also, LISTSERV is highly RFC-compliant so another clue might be found in RFC
822 (which is the relevant one for Subject: headers).  Section 3.4.8
suggests that 'long' header fields are:

"...commonly interpreted to mean greater than 65 or 72 characters. The
former length serves as a limit, when the message is to be viewed on most
simple terminals which use simple display software; however, the limit is
not imposed by this standard."

It looks like shortening the subject is your best choice.
